COMPUTER INFRASTRUCTURE
The Computer Center is equipped with the
following:
There is one large-capacity network server
and 14 user’s terminals and one so-called Internet server machine. All of the user’s
terminals contain a CD-ROM drive, CD-writer, voice card and speakers, making it possible
to run multi-media programs on them. The terminals are equipped with 17” and 19”
monitors and because of their being on a network, files stored on the server can also be
accessed from them. The fast server (with an Intel P4-3.MHz processor) contains two 120 GB
hard drives which allow us to store and access large quantities of files as well as
especially large files. The server is also connected to a separate CD-writer, making
possible the archiving of materials. The scanner (with which the digitalization of all
written and photographic documents occurs) is also hooked up to the server. The
interruption-free operation of the server is ensured by an emergency power supply unit
which becomes operational in the case of power outages.
We have placed into operation – connected
to one of the user’s terminals – a digitalizing table which enables us to digitalize
large-size and map-shaped documents.
Materials created on the network can be printed on one of three laser printers.
The Internet can be reached from the system through the Internet server. We have thereby
created the possibility of Internet access to already existing and future electronic
documents, research projects, liturgical and religious publications, the university’s
student newspaper stored on the server, the Library’s digitalized documents, etc.
We make extended use of the computer system during training (e.g. the course titled “The
Bible and the Internet”), the collection of various materials, in methodological
training, research and the operation of the internal information system of the Institute.
There is an internal network connection between the Computer Center and the Library’s
computer network with the help of which library and inter-library services can be
accessed.
The Computer Center is in direct connection with departmental administrations which are
thereby enabled to store, exchange and process information on the central server.
In all of the specializations of the JTSH
computer science can be studied as an elective subject for 1-4 semesters – depending on
the student’s previous knowledge – as two contact classes weekly which can be
supplemented by the student’s use of computers in his or her free time. Computer
training consists of modules in basic level computer operation, word, table and database
processing, the use of the Internet and library systems.
