The objective of the course:

1. Introduction to the special logic of the prayer book’s internal structure.

2. Introduction to the complete Hebrew texts of the weekday and Sabbath Sidur, the Machzorim of the Pilgrim Festivals and High Holidays, and the Haggada of the Seder night, in conjunction with their background in the Torah.

Realization of the objective:

1. The material is proportionally divided between two semesters. The student learns the techniques of reading and translating Hebrew texts with the help of Noach Golinkin’s methodology and Stricker’s “Bible-dictionary”. A significant element of these semesters is the comparison of the Herz-Bible, the text of the Torah annotated by Deutsch with the text of the prayer book. Suggested reading material for this course, especially in the case of long-distance training, are units of religious literature which have been published recently and which include partial exegesis. The most important of these are:

- Ávodát Jisztáél. Izráel Istentisztelete. Imádságos könyv. [Avodat Yisrael. The Devotion of Israel. Book of Prayers] Bp. 1987.
- Szidur Tefilá. Zsidó Imakönyv. [Sidur Tefilah. Jewish Prayer Book] Budapest, 1996.
- Máchzor leRos Hásáná. A zsidó újév imakönyve. [Machzor leRosh Hashanah. The Prayer Book of the Jewish New Year] Bp. 1997.
- Máchzor leJom haKippurim. Engesztelőnap imarendje. [Machzor leYom haKippurim. The Order of Prayers for the Day of Repentance] Bp. 1998.
- Szidur leSábát. Szombati Imádságok. [Sidur leShabat. Shabat Prayers] Bp. 1999.
- Széder Birkát Hámázon. Asztali áldás. Szefárd fonetikus átírással és magyar forditással. [Seder Birkat Hamazon. Table Blessing with phonetic Sefardic transcription and Hungarian translation] Bp. 1998.
- OMZSA Hággáda. Bp. 1988.
- Lél Simurim. Az Örködés Éjszakája. [Lel Shimurim. The Night of Waking]Bp. 1999.
- Hággádá sel Peszách. Hagada. Az egyiptomi kivonulás elbeszélése, Pészach első két estéjére, a Széder-estekre. [Haggada shel Pesach. Haggada, the Story of the Exodus from Egypt for the First Two Nights of Passover, the Seders]Bp. 1999.
- Hágádát háIs Gávriél. A teljes Peszách-Hággádá. Magyar fordítással fonetikus átírással, magyarázattal és gyakorlati útmutatóval. [Haggadat haIsh Gavriel. The Complete Passover Haggada, with Hungarian translation, phonetic transcription, explanation and practical guide] Jeruzsálem, 1999.

2. Students share their experiences of religious services in the form of classroom presentations. They recount the Torah-based, verbal, musical or narrative customs of their communities.

3. Students take a colloquium at the end of the third semester and receive a seminar grade at the end of the fourth.
